Winnie – the little fighter with the big heart

“I am Winnie. Today I can finally live in safety – but my journey here was long, painful and full of fear. That I am still here today is almost a miracle.”

My story

We suspect that Winnie lived for many years as a chained dog on a farm – tied up, forgotten, and fed scraps and garbage. His broken hind legs and knees tell the story of a life of confinement and neglect.

At some point, Winnie ended up in the road – and was hit by a car. The accident was devastating: a dislocated skull plate, a lost eye, and severe injuries to his back and joints. To this day, he has lost his sense of smell and sneezes frequently. Despite this, he survived.

But instead of receiving help, Winnie was taken to one of Romania's worst kill shelters . Over 1,000 dogs await death there in horrific conditions. Winnie – old, injured, half-blind, and terrified – really had no chance.

Until animal rights activist Delia saw him. Precisely because his situation seemed so hopeless, she decided: I won't leave this dog behind. And that's how Winnie was rescued.

But the emotional wounds ran deep. He spent a whole year in the animal shelter, hidden in his kennel, terrified of people and other dogs. Only when Svenja gave him a foster home in 2018 did his new life slowly begin. With endless patience, affection, and love, Winnie learned to trust again. Eventually, the moment came when he snuggled up for the first time. A quiet but tremendous victory.

Today, Winnie is a cheerful, sensitive little character – cautious but curious, cuddly, and full of life. 🐾
